Big Layers: Yellow gold chains are wrapping themselves around the necks of fashionistas once, twice – and even three or four times this Spring. Jewelry trends to watch as we enter 2008, as seen in our recent canvassing of our designers and in attending trade shows in New York and Europe, include:

1. Combining yellow gold with warm hues such as rose and pink gold will continue to be the trend in 2008. Plus, expect to see a lot of use of multi-colored semi-precious stones like lavender and green amethyst, smokey topaz and yellow citrine, and pink tourmalines.

2. On wrists this season will be a mix of bangles with different widths and textures. We’ll see a great deal of stacking. Women are taking two or three medium to large complementary bracelets and wearing them together.

3. Lighter gold with more open-work designs will become more popular as gold prices rise.

4. Mixing colored and white diamonds will become more popular.

Sotheby's To Auction Rare Diamond

Sotheby's has announced that it will offer the largest flawless brilliant-cut diamond ever to appear at auction at its "Magnificent Jewels" sale in Geneva on Nov. 14.The diamond—an 84.37-carat brilliant-cut D-color stone with flawless clarity—is estimated at $12 million-$16 million.In addition to its extraordinary carat weight (which is unprecedented for a brilliant-cut diamond of this quality at auction according to Sotheby's), the diamond has also received the highest possible grading from the Gemological Institute of America. Yellow Door Jewelers Get "Royal" Treatment

Luna and Jonathan Zemmol of The Yellow Door in Brooklyn and Manhattan recently attended the semi-annual conference of the Independent Jewelers Organization (IJO) held in Orlando, Florida, to obtain the latest information on what's happening in the jewelry industry and to see and buy the newest jewelry designs on the market for the fall season. Pictured to the right with Royal Gem co-owner Sandra Nassima, the Zemmol's had the honor of witnessing the unveiling of the "Royal Necklace," an exquisite piece put together by Royal Gem, an Antwerp diamond supplier to IJO members.

The exception necklace was created to celebrate Royal Gem's 30th Anniversary and was seen for the very first time at the IJO conference. It consists of 13 diamonds ranging in color from fancy pink to vivid pink with a 3.81 carat center stone of vivid orange. The total weight of diamonds in this collector's piece is16.41 carats and the value is in the many millions of dollars because of the rarity of the diamonds in natural colors.

"What an absolute treat to have the opportunity to see and hold this amazing necklace," Luna Zemmol said. "As a jeweler I understand how rare all diamonds are, but to see something this size whose colors have naturally occurred in nature is just priceless."

Distinctive, fashion-forward styles are driving fine jewelry this fall. At the JA New York Jewelry Show and the Independent Jewelers Organization Trade Fair in Orlando, jewelery brands offered detailed fine yellow gold jewelry and prismatic colors.

Fine jewelry sales for fall are looking up, following on from the past two years of double digit increases (according to Women's Wear Daily). Jewelers are crediting the growth in the category to the expanding group of self-purchasing women, from whom the ideal price point is between $500 and $2,500 -- not far-fetched when the prices of designer handbags are considered. The average price of the designer handbag is about $1,500.

Luna Zemmol, buyer for The Yellow Door notes some distinctive trends for the fall:

Yellow Gold with texture, in lush 18k finish. SeidenGang Designs will be previewing detailed rings, pendents and earrings with intricate filigrees and rich-tone gems stones.
Sterling Silver with 18k gold. Lorenzo is an amazing new line -- at accessible price points -- that will be debuting this fall, after being showcased at the Grammy's this past year. Look for melding sterling with 18k finishes -- and enhanced with gem stones like honey citrine, green amethyst, and aquamarines.
Hoop, hoop, hooray! Yellow Gold hoops, White Gold hoops, diamond-encrusted hoops, and hoops embellished with gem stones. This trend is not stopping.
Pearls, pearls, pearls. But take note -- these are not your Grannie's old pearls. Majorica is debuting an incredible selection of baroque pearls -- in strands and as pendents. This ground-breaking company is launching hues that will be coveted by the most discriminating customer this fall -- in golds, greys, purples, and chocolates.
Bangles bracelets continue to be important. A "must have" for the fall is the micro-pave diamond bangle set -- in yellow and white gold.

Fashion Accessories are becoming fashion necessities for today’s woman. The NPD Group, an industry trade group, recently ranked accessories categories by unit share of market for women during the first quarter of 2007. Earrings, Necklaces, Bracelets and Rings all ranked in the TOP FIVE! Handbags were the only other non-jewelry accessory in the top 5. Other accessories items that made it to the Top Ten include gloves, sunglasses, wallets, belts, and cold weather hats.
